Disadvantages of CMC (sodium carboxy methyl cellulose) used in Toothpaste

• NO LONGER SHELF-LIFE PERIOD OF TOOTHPASTE : In the general CMC formulations, the toothpaste gets HARDER and loose to retain its consistency in paste form especially after six months of prolonged storage or when it undergoes change in temperature conditions.
• PHASE SEPARATION : In many CMC formulated Toothpaste, you can see that there is no uniform dispersion maintained at prolonged storage even after 2-3 months. Especially in CMC based toothpastes, the binding phase of solid suspension with sorbitol/glycerin BREAKS and you may find a DULL & LOOSE paste while removing out from the tube and drips through the toothbrush bristles badly with separated part of free flowing liquid with solids. This is more common in toothpaste with different kind of solid carriers especially like Herbs, Whitening granules etc.
• NO COMPARABILITY WITH PURE SORBITOL FORMULATIONS : CMC cannot withstand its binding properties when only sorbitol is used even if the binder is used in more proportions. CMC is more stable and compatible with Glycerin-Sorbitol solutions. SOLCOLLOID is compatible even for pure sorbitol formulations and shall impart the same superior binding properties as in Glycerin-Sorbitol formulations.
• LESS LUSTRE : The lustre giving properties of CMC is very weak. Whereas, when SOLCOLLOID is used, one can find by himself the fantastic gloss which it imparts.
